Course info
The course introduces the history of British literature since the nineteenth century through close readings of carefully selected texts against their intellectual and historical backdrop. It will familiarize the students with the major periods, authors, and texts of modern British literature. It will, furthermore, furnish them with the opportunity to engage intellectually, aesthetically, and emotionally with excerpts from major literary texts, honing their reading of literature in the process. This will not only enable them to acquire knowledge about modern British literature, but to discern the relationship between literature and history, and to appreciate what is particular/local and universal about literature.
